Introduction
We would like to invite you to participate in a project investigating language translation. This research aims to establish common translations for words in English and Chinese.
What will I be asked to do?
You will be asked to complete an online questionnaire that involves answering basic demographic questions (age, gender, education, language, and location) and questions about your language history, completing a short language proficiency task in both English and Chinese, and also a translation task in which you will see words in one of your languages and be asked to provide the first translation that comes to mind for each word.
What are the benefits?
You will be offered two credits in exchange for participating in this study which is estimated to take 1 hour. The outcomes of this study will be greatly useful for future research investigating languages and bilingualism. The data will be presented at conferences, in proceedings papers and journal articles and will be made available to other researchers either as supplemental materials of journal articles or as a downloadable file available on publicly accessible websites (http://psychologicalsciences.unimelb.edu.au/research/chdh/ccs/studies/).

What are the risks?
Risks are minimal. The length of the survey depends on the time available, so you can easily integrate it in your schedule. The task is easy but can be repetitive if you do it for a long time. As with all work, a short break can reduce risks of fatigue.

How would my confidentiality be protected?
The confidentiality of your data is protected subject to legal limitations. We will not ask you any personal identifying information. We will ask you location information, from which we will derive the city and region, and also some basic demographic information (age, gender, education, native language). You are free to choose whether you agree to share this information. None of this information would allow us to identify any one person, given that the sample size of our study will be large. The data will be stored on password-protected online databases accessible only to the researchers. The datasets will not be destroyed and may be used for future research.
What if I want to withdraw from the Research?
Participation in this research is completely voluntary. You are free to withdraw at any time and to withdraw any unprocessed data previously supplied.

Consent to participate in study
I consent to participate in this project, the details of which have been explained to me. I confirm that I have are read and acknowledge that:
- I understand that this project is for research purposes only.
- In this project I will be required to answer demographic/language history questions, complete two language proficiency tasks, and translate a set of words. The details of this have been explained in the Plain Language Statement shown above.
- I understand that there are no anticipated risks involved in participating in this research project. To minimize the risk of fatigue, I can interrupt and continue the online task at my own convenience.
- My participation is voluntary and that I am free to withdraw from the project at any time without explanation or prejudice and to withdraw any unprocessed data I have provided.
- I will be compensated proportionally to the length of the task I choose. Checks will be performed to verify whether the responses are given are reasonable. I accept that approval for compensation is subject on these checks.
- I have been informed that the data from this research will be stored at the University of Melbourne and will only be accessible by the named researchers on this form. Upon completion of the study, a summary of these data will be made available at Computational Cognitive Science webpage.
- I have been informed that the confidentiality of the information I provide will be safeguarded subject to any legal requirements; my data will be password protected and accessible only by the named researchers.
